Licensing & editions

Free works without activation. Paid editions use a license provider to determine the active edition while FossilCore's central feature policy controls capabilities.

FossilCore Free Personal

Free Personal does not require registration, an online account or a license key. It provides the core specimen, Site, taxonomy, image, map, catalogue, label and Collection Explorer capabilities defined for personal use.

FossilCore PRO

PRO is the paid advanced personal edition. The planned production licensing flow uses Lemon Squeezy to issue a license key. The user enters that key in FossilCore's License Management screen and activates the installation. Version updates are included with the paid license.

Institutional

Institutional includes PRO capabilities plus organization-oriented user, shared-storage, environment-backup and migration administration. It is offered as either a $499 one-time license or a $99 yearly license. Both purchase options unlock the same Institutional feature set, and version updates are included in the license price.

Offline behavior

After successful paid activation, FossilCore stores protected local activation information. It does not need to contact the license service on every launch. Periodic validation can occur when due; a temporary network failure does not immediately remove a previously valid paid edition.

License Management

The License Management window is designed to show the active edition and provider, protected license identity, computer/installation information, activation and verification dates, and the actions appropriate to the selected licensing provider.

Edition changes and data

FossilCore licensing controls capabilities, not ownership of Collection data. A lower edition does not delete specimen records created while a higher edition was active. Depending on the feature, advanced data may remain editable, become read-only, or simply remain stored while the tool that created it is unavailable.

Transition note: the current development architecture can keep both the legacy FossilCore licensing provider and Lemon Squeezy behind a provider flag. Legacy remains available during migration and can be removed later without redesigning feature gating.
